  • Key Stage 1 Indoor Athletics Champions

Tue 06 Dec 2022 Mr Hopkinson

Well done to our year 2 children that took park in the KS1 indoor athletics competition at Arnold Hill Academy tonight. They faced tough competition against Hawthorne, Ernehale, Mapperley Plains, Arnold View and Standhill Infants but managed to come out the winners.

I am so proud of each one of them for the way they performed and how they represented the school! It was a pleasure taking them and sharing the experience with them.

A big thanks to Miss Sheppard for coming and supporting them too!

  • Autumn photograph competition

Fri 18 Nov 2022 Mr Hopkinson

Thank you to everyone that took part in the autumn photo competition which Mrs Sellers kindly organised. We had some amazing entries and it was very difficult to decide on a winning photo. After a vote amongst the staff, Reuben (Brave Bears) was chosen as this year’s winner and has been awarded a weather station. All the children that participated have received a well-deserved certificate!

You can view the photographs here.

  • Foundation 2 garden transformation

Mon 07 Nov 2022 Mr Hopkinson

The Early Years Garden has seen a transformation over half term. Many thanks to all who came to build, dig, plant, sweep, carry, and tidy. The raised bedding will provide wonderful learning opportunities as pupils grow plants and vegetables. The new sensory walkway has fresh plants purposefully chosen to entice the senses. We are also thrilled to now have a large balance scale in the garden for pupils to use, kindly made by a Grandad.

So many people have given their time and resources so freely; we feel truly blessed to have such wonderful parents at Woodthorpe.

Frank Key have kindly donated materials for the project, FOWI kindly paid for a water butt, guttering and trellis, another grandparent has sponsored a water butt for the garden area, and Tony Smith from Arnold market has kindly donated plants and bulbs.

Thank you to those who gave their time to assist on site – Ryan, Catherine, Logan, Ann, Sam, Rob, Nathan and Mrs Offord. Special thanks go to Steve who built our raised bedding and managed the project.

  • Solids, liquids and gases

Tue 11 Oct 2022 Mrs Sellers

This was the last week at Science Tots. The children were investigating solids, liquids and gases. They started the session by having an ice cube each and during the session they observed what changes occurred.  The children really enjoyed the session and the highlight was making slime.

  • Rocks at Science Tots

This week at Science Tots the children were exploring different types of rocks. They experimented which rocks floated and which sank. Last week, we were lucky enough to welcome many of our parents/carers into school to share year group curriculum information. The event was very well attended and I hope you found the meetings useful and informative.

If you were unable to attend, you can view the presentations used by year group teachers by choosing the relevant year group on the curriculum section of our website here.

  • Another week at Science Tots

Tue 27 Sep 2022 Mrs Sellers

This week at Science Tots the children were having fun with physics. The children started the session with investigating magnetics and air pressure. Later in the session the children used their knowledge to raise water to the top of a container with just using stones (water displacement). They learnt that there was more movement from the water with the larger the stone. Finally, the children had a competition to build an unsupported tower. Lots of reciprocity was used!

  • More fun at Science Tots

Tue 20 Sep 2022 Mrs Sellers

This week at Science Tots the children were investigating science jobs they can do when they grow up. They explored being a dentist, botanist, archaeologist, doctor, engineer and an astronomer. They became Environmental Scientist saying how they could make the environment better.
