The Benefits of Forest School
Forest School offers a treasure trove of benefits for children.
- Social and Emotional Well-being: Immersion in nature fosters a sense of calm and reduces stress. Forest School sessions provide opportunities for collaboration, communication and social interaction, building confidence and resilience.
- Cognitive Development: The natural world is a playground for curiosity! Exploring the textures, shapes and sounds of the outdoors stimulates the senses and encourages problem-solving skills. Building dens, climbing trees and navigating their environment all contribute to critical thinking and creativity.
- Physical Development: Forest Schools privide ample space for energetic play, promoting gross and fine motor skills. From balancing on logs to building fires (under adult supervision!), children develop strength, coordination and dexterity.
- Environmental Awareness: By spending time in nature, children develop a deep appreciation for the environment. They learn about different ecosystems, plant and animal life and the importance of sustainability.
- Self-Esteem and Confidence: Forest School empowers children to take risks in a safe and supportive environment. Overcoming challenges, mastering new skills and working independently contribute to a strong sense of self-esteem and confidence.
- Lifelong Learning: Forest School fosters a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom walls. Children develop a sense of curiosity and a desire to explore the world around them, a foundation for lifelong learning.
Forest School at WIS
Forest School is a child centred learning environment that embraces the natural world as a classroom. At WIS, our Forest School sessions focus on the wellbeing, physical and emotional development, of each child. Before Forest School session begins, the woodland area is checked and the equipment is prepared and organised, ready for fun!
We start each session by gathering together and checking in on how each child is feeling and what they wish to explore during their time in nature. We remind ourselves of the Forest School rules to ensure our safety as well as those of the animals and plants that we share the environment with. We introduce new ideas and invite the children to engage with our help, when they wish to.
The woodland space is a blank canvas, full of textures and materials to enrich the senses and stimulate the learning journeys that we all undertake. We plan for and organise the direction of each session, should the children need us to provide this for them but understand the importance of encouraging them to decide their own direction of learning and investigation. During this time of exploration and discovery, we provide the nurturing they need, whilst also encouraging them to stay with challenge and to make sense of the experiences they have.
