Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB)

DEIB at WIS

Our school provides a warm and caring ethos that respects, values and celebrates difference.  Through our Respect curriculum, we teach the children about:

  • Relationships and Health Education (RHE)
  • Zones of Regulation (ZR)
  • Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)
  • Anti-racism Education

Respect lessons are taught weekly in every year group.  In addition we use assemblies to promote DEIB.  Circle times are also used, to expand on the learning that week, develop relationships, as well as an opportunity to discuss any worries or incidents that may have occurred that day.

Our use of resources, books, displays and teaching content and materials have been carefully chosen and planned for to expose our children to 'Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB).  Our entire book stock throughout school, including the phonics books children take home and the stories they have access to in the classroom, are representative of modern society.

DEIB Consultation Group

At Woodthorpe Infants, we have a DEIB consultation group made up of parents, the SENCO and Head Teacher.  The group meets once a term to look at events in both the school community and in the wider world, through a critical DEIB lens to ensure that we respect, value and celebrate difference.

Our parents say:

"As part of the Woodthorpe Infants DEIB group, we work together and meet termly to make adaptations in school that benefit the pupils.  Key considerations include inclusivity for children with additional needs, as well as offering ideas that do not exclude anyone regardless of ethnicity, religion or gender."

"As a parent, I've seen firsthand how this group actively promotes understanding, respect and equity within our school community.  It's inspiring to be part of such meaningful work."

"I think our Woodthorpe Infants DEIB group is a great addition to the conversation around how to make our children feel welcome and included in school activities, regardless of ethnicity, ability, gender or religion.  The school already do a lot to incorporate inclusivity in our children's learning so that they feel represented.  Meeting termly also allows parents to feedback regularly and keep the conversation flowing."

"The very nature of DEIB has been executed exceptionally to us by Woodthorpe Infants engaging parents/carers in the group.  A safe, open area where ideas and perspectives provide valuable insights focusing on an inclusive, nurturing environment not just for our children but for us adults too.  Some great, innovative ideas are heard, encouraged and grown."
